Kate ♪
"Are you... like a superhero? Like a real life one?" It's a hushed question. :The things you do, when you keep watch at night—" Maybe another reason why he wears the mask, other than to hide the face he doesn't like. "Is that what you are?"
Something shifted in Rorschach then. Before his desire to protect Kate had just been something nebulous, the same way it was for anyone else in town. Now it was more specific. A girl pure as this needed someone to watch out for her, especially in a town with a predominantly male population. He was going to be that person for her, though he'd never explicitly say that out loud.
A young lady who has a melancholy to her I have yet to get to the bottom of, though what bits and pieces I've learned is horrific in nature. No wonder she has sad eyes. Why is it those who are actually chaste and good in nature who must be made to suffer? Kate is possibly the only person in this town I can stand to be around for any great length of time. We have an understanding of one another: she's fine with my frequent silences and inability to truly communicate what goes on in my mind while I let her tell me only what she wants me to know without pressing for more. At first I was skeptical her gentle, kind nature was the truth of her character and not an act. I say now it certainty she is what she appears to be, a pure young woman, which makes her about as rare as blue roses naturally growing in a garden.
March ♪
March doesn't bother to hide his widening eyes, and he holds both hands up as if showing Rorschach there's no weapon in them will somehow placate the beast. Wrong line of questioning. Or right line, maybe, depending on things. It's definitely not something March is going to press when the guy already hates his guts. Either way: extreme hostility noted.
Was this guy for real? Rorschach wasn't sure what was weirder, the fact that he'd clearly found the village idiot or that the tune he was trying to sing sounded vaguely familiar.
Every village needs an idiot and I have discovered him. The saying goes that God watches over little children and idiots, and while the former part might be false, I can say with confidence the latter is certainly correct. It's the only way that explains his continued existence in this place when he spends half of his time drunk and the other half of the time making brainless remarks that require no thought at all. I would have killed him by now were it not for the fact he clearly has no true malice within him for all that he possesses three braincells.
Bigby ♪
Under different circumstances the man's face - or, well, more like face situation, considering that mask - would have been eerie too. But considering some of the stuff Bigby is used to, whatever the other has got going on isn't too strange to him. Seems like the standard of some random Fables off their glamour, honestly.
Rorschach didn't say anything in regards to Bigby apparently being weird about dogs. His measure for what constituted "normal behavior" in people was so skewed as to be unable to truly know what average people acted like. Maybe all people were like this. So it went without comment.
A rough character who has a strange personality. He's got a better head on his shoulders than half the people here. I feel he'd be able to take care of himself if someone (or something, with how strange things are around here) picked a fight with him. There's something about him that reminds me of the denizens of New York that would gather in the neighborhood bars. Tough sorts drinking to forget or to remember, each with their own stories, but none willing to share. Figuring out what's going on beneath his surface might require a bit of time.
Levi ♪
Sometimes he managed to get some alone time, but other times people talking (especially to him) was too much.
Rorschach, though, was quiet. And not a people person either. So it seemed likely that it'd be peaceful near the other man. He sits down, a few arms lengths away from the other man. He nods if acknowledged, but doesn't say anything.
"Death is for the weak." At least in a place like this it was. The dangers here provided by the weather and environment were just as bad as the ones that appeared to be supernatural in nature. If you were strong, you survived. If not, you perished. [...]
"Don't think you are weak." A rare compliment from the vigilante. He didn't give them out lightly and only spoke the truth when he did.
Another teenager in this place, although this one appears to have come from a rough place. (And time? And...world? The way people end up here and where they come from is something I'm still investigating.) He's got himself put together enough not to need someone constantly watching over him, although I've found myself teaming up with him several times now when one of us is in peril or needs someone to watch the other's back. He's got some skeletons in his closet. Talking to him in the dark made that clear enough. The darkness often does that for those that have lost their innocence, loosening tongues to spew something close to the truth. As for me? I listen as I always do, only talking back when I have something to actually say.
Louis De Pointe Du Lac♪
Now he is seized with a burning curiosity to know what lies beneath the mask. It's quite the opposite situation to Louis's. Louis wore a mask, figuratively, to hide his true nature. He still keeps a few up his sleeve and alternates between them when speaking to people in Milton. If what he says is true, Rorschach puts one on to reveal his true face.
Two things struck Rorschach. The first, which he tamped back down into the back of his mind as soon as he could, was that he was very pretty. [...] That made something old and rusty with disuse start up for a moment in the back of his mind, a certain sense of want he wasn't sure he could define, not even to himself. But he ignored it. If he just didn't pay it any attention, it would eventually go away.
An exceptionally pretty man. What beautiful eyes.He sees far more than I would like him to.Encountering him at the hot springs was an exceptionally awkward first meeting. He strikes me as a bit effeminate in nature and there's a look in his eyes which makes me feel he's hiding something important. (Possibly homosexual? I'll need to keep an eye on him for longer before drawing any conclusions.) But aren't we all? I'll get to the bottom of it sooner or later. Secrets don't stay secret for long in a small town or so the saying goes.
Update: He's a vampire. (Still possibly homosexual too.) There's a sentence I never thought I would be writing. At least it makes sense. No one that good looking could possibly be human. I'm sure he bewitched me with some strange unnatural vampire power. It would explain the thoughts I have had about him. I must have been insane to let him drink from me, even if there was no other way out of our predicament. I won't let such a loss of control from me happen again.
La'an ♪
"What should I call you?" Not what his name is, or what others call him. What does he want her to call him. For someone who understands the significance of names, it's an important distinction.
La'an seemed competent and smart, two things that others here were sorely lacking. He'd wanted to make sure someone like that hadn't simply wandered off into the wilderness to die the way he'd suspected some of the others who were missing had done
There's a strength within in her which I have seen few women possess. It doesn't diminish her femininity but instead simply compliments the good qualities she already has. She would have made a good vigilante had she been born at the right time for such a thing to be possible. I don't feel like I need to protect her as much as some here. I'd feel comfortable with her having my back in a fight and that's another rare quality to find among anyone, let alone in a place like this.

CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: Rorschach aka Walter Kovacs
• Character Age: 45 (He's said to be 35 by news reports but this was confirmed to be a continuity error.)
• Character Canon: Watchmen (Movie)
• Canon Point: When he and Nite Owl are flying to the Antarctic
• Character History: Who watches the Watchmen?
• Character Personality:
— Positive Trait: Determination and courage. Not just anyone can be a superhero, especially considering most of those in the Watchmen universe don't have powers. Rorschach has been doing what he does for a very long time. When he's actively on a case or protecting someone, he never gives up no matter what it takes. When surrounded by a whole lot of men he put in prison who want him dead, he doesn't flinch or cower. Instead, he makes a bold statement of violence that sets him up as being the most brutal motherfucker in the room, and gets a great number of them to back off for fear he's going to deal with them next.
— Positive Trait: Caring and protective. For all he tries to act otherwise, Rorschach actually cares quite a lot about people as a whole, even if individuals tend to disappoint him. He didn't get into the superhero trade because he thought it would make him famous or wealthy or because it seemed fun. He did it solely so he could help people out and make the world a better place. Unfortunately, this caring tendency also means he feels his emotions very deeply, especially when he feels he's failed in his duties to protect people. Part of the inflexibility mentioned below stems from trying not to get hurt emotionally time and again.
— Positive Trait: Situational awareness. Rorschach is far smarter than his awkward ways with most people would let on. When it comes to fighting, he's quick to survey the environment around him for tools to use and improvise weapons from. When he's using his detective skills, it's shown he has a knack for thinking outside the box, such as when it comes to figuring out where the Comedian stored his gear in a spot completely hidden in the back of his closet.
— Negative Trait: No social skills. Rorschach has all the social skills of a mangy alley cat and that's being generous. He's blunt to the point of rudeness, makes no attempt at getting along with people, and pushes as hard as he can against their boundaries in an attempt to make them snap or push him away. He has precisely one friend in the form of Nite Owl and very nearly drives him away with his actions. Something as simple as a handshake is shown to be a very intimate act for him and it's implied that before initiating one with Nite Owl late in the movie it had been a very long time since any approached him with any positive physical intent.
— Negative Trait: Inflexible. Rorschach, much like the mask he wears, thinks in black-and-white. People are either good or evil with no in-between. Women are either saints or whores. This is a coping mechanism thought up to help keep the world in an orderly fashion in his mind. Without it, facing the chaos and often senseless tragedies that happen is too much for him. Unfortunately, this very mindset makes it hard for him to function around people. People are always in shades of grey, himself included, and he often finds contradictions in his logic that are difficult or impossible for him to overcome. Ironically, if the world functioned as he truly wanted it to, there would be no place for him in it.
— Negative Trait: Brutal. Rorschach has lived in a harsh world for many years fighting criminals. After an extremely traumatizing child murder case in the 70s, he began murdering those who committed crimes rather than letting them live and turning them into the police. This continues up to the present day, where he shows far more force than he needs to when facing opponents, even when doing something as simple as interrogating a suspect. His harsh nature makes it hard for him to back down and take situations from a ten down to a three.
• Character Skills:
• Fighting skills. He's skilled in gymnastics, boxing, and judo, creating a unique way of fighting opponents.
• Detective. He's very observant about the world around him, talented in being able to read situations and to a lesser extent people.
• Scrounging. Seeing as how he's been one step above homelessness for about ten years, he's good at finding things he needs to survive, whether that's food or tools.
• Make and repair clothes. He's got some talent in making clothes (he figured out a way to make several masks from a dress without destroying the unique materials it was made out of) and being able to repair them.

Skills: - Excels in boxing, gymnastics, and judo, enough he was able to take on far too many cops and still beat the crap out of a number of them.
- Very observant, uses detective skills as often as he uses his fists, and is able to read people with surprising accuracy despite his own lack of personal social skills.
- Very good at improvising weapons. When push comes to shove, he'll start looking around for the nearest thing he can use to subdue someone with.
- Surprisingly tough for a normal man. He managed to walk through the freezing cold of the Antarctic in only the outfit described above.

Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: He'll have the black and white wings of a black-and-white hawk-eagle. In addition, his feet will be able to morph into the yellow gripping talons of a bird of prey and back to more normal looking ones at will.
Role Reasoning: Despite Rorschach being a brutal and unforgiving vigilante who isn't quite sane any longer, he does at least try to be a good person. Granted, his definition of "good" tends to be a whole lot different than most people's but he sees the world as made up of innocent victims and evil that preys upon them, his rigid black-and-white thinking not allowing for any grey in his world. He's determined to try and save as many people from evil as he can. At first in Folkmore, he's going to see the categories as just further reflecting the hard, uncompromising black-and-white way he sees the world. But people aren't made up of just stark good and bad parts, so the more CR he gets and (is forced to) interact with people, it will help to challenge these notions.
Option 2.
OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:
The below answers will contain the following CWs: brutal death of a child, human body dismembered, animals eating human remains, gory animal death, gory human death, child abuse both mental and physical, and mentions of sex work.
- What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
By far the most traumatic experience of Rorschach's life was the Blair Roche case. A young six year old girl was kidnapped by a man who mistakenly thought her family was wealthy. Rorschach took on the case for "personal reasons" and promised to return her home safe and sound. What he found instead when he tracked her down was a horrific scene. The man had murdered her, hacked her into bits, and fed her to his German Shepherds. While he'd always teetered on the edge of a full-blown psychotic breakdown, this was what finally set him over the edge. Whatever was left of Walter Kovacs, the man who still had humanity in his heart, died that night with the little girl. What was left was Rorschach, the vigilante who saw things only in black and white, no longer human but more of a symbol left in what he saw as a godforsaken world. When the kidnapper returned, Rorschach killed for the first time, hacking into his skull with the same cleaver he'd used to kill Blair with even after the man confessed and begged to be arrested. As he put it, "Men get arrested. Dogs get put down."
- What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
The most defining relationship of Rorschach's life is definitely with his partner Dan Dreiberg, the second Nite Owl. They met shortly after they had both begun crime-fighting, and despite his usual social awkwardness, somehow he managed to get along with Dan quite well. He has a very big soft spot for Nite Owl. He's the first one he warns when he suspects there's someone killing costumed vigilantes. This is also evident when Dan finally has enough of Rorschach being an asshole and snaps at him. Anyone else would lose a few teeth for that or at the very least have Rorschach walk out on them for good, but Walter actually apologizes to him, says he's been a good friend, and even initiates physical contact for once as he shakes Dan's hand. He also is very concerned at times for Dan's well-being. When Dan completely loses it in a bar after the first Nite Owl and his mentor is killed, he begins beating a suspect literally to death. Rorschach, of all people, knows he's going too far and pulls him off, dragging him out before Dan does something they both know he'll regret.
Rorschach tends to be prickly even with Dan after knowing each other for so long but part of it is implied to be disappointment at seeing Dan fall so short of his potential, just becoming "a flabby failure" who sits in his basement when Rorschach knows he could be doing so much good in the world. He has a level of trust for his partner that few can ever access and it's reciprocated. Despite knowing Rorschach is a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket, Dan also knows he's not nearly as crazy as people think, and knows Rorschach often sees things others don't.
- What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?
Rorschach, much like the mask he wears, thinks completely in black-and-white. There is good and evil. Good people and the bad ones who prey upon them. Innocents and guilty parties. This is a unbelievable and oftentimes unsustainable mindset for him but still he persists in trying to see the world this way. Still, personal bias oftentimes creeps into his thinking. Ironically, Rorschach himself doesn't fit his code very well at all. He's full of paradoxes and contradictions, in shades of grey despite his desire to see a world made of black and white. In that world of his, were it to actually exist, there would be no room for him at all. Even with his rigid thinking, there's room for unconscious bias. He's only human after all, despite his desires to be otherwise. The closer someone is to him, the more he's likely to make exceptions or excuses for their behavior. He may think of them as immoral or partially corrupt but he won't completely write them off despite their values or morals not completely aligning with his.
- If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?
If Rorschach could change one thing about his life, it would be who he was born to. Sylvia Kovacs was a prostitute and Mother of the Year she was not. She'd do things like have sex in front of her son, who innocently asked if her client was hurting her, and then slapped him when the man left without even paying her in disgust. She sneered at him she should have gotten an abortion instead of giving birth to him. It is implied this is the very least of what the woman did to Walter, cold and unloving, seeing her son as little more than an inconvenient nuisance. To say this childhood fucked up Rorschach immensely is an understatement. While Social Services did eventually get involved and removed him when he was ten years old, the damage was already done. When he was sixteen and found out his mother was dead, killed by her pimp who forced her to ingest cleaning fluid, he coldly said only one word: "Good." While he'll never admit it out loud, he knows if an actual caring mother had raised him instead of Sylvia, he would have turned out far differently.
- What famous folklore, legend, or myth would you associate your character with? Are they literally inspired by Snow White? Do they have similar struggles or energy as Red Riding Hood?
Bearskin. The story tells of a former soldier who is poor. The Devil offers to make him rich beyond his wildest dreams if he'll live for seven years while fulfilling various conditions, including not bathing, cutting his hair, wear the skin of a bear, etc. If he fails, the Devil gets his soul. While almost everyone is repulsed by him, eventually one girl agrees to marry him after he helps out her father and his other two daughters turn him down, thinking him to be like some wild beast. When the seven years are up, he's able get clean, now looks very attractive, and is very wealthy to boot. His wife doesn't recognize him, and when he reveals who he is, her two sisters kill themselves out of shame, realizing they could have been rich beyond their wildest dreams had they not turned him down. The Devil gloats as he collects their souls, saying he got two for the price of the soldier's one.
Much like in the tale, people who meet Rorschach tend to initially be a bit repulsed by him or at the very least unnerved. It's to be expected. He's a strange man wearing a creepy mask, is obviously a lunatic of some sort, and generally looks (and smells like) he's probably homeless or one step away from it. But while he's not much to look at on the outside, Rorschach isn't all bad beneath the surface. He presents a tough front but it's often implied he does this because he has a lot of empathy for people. He sees the world and the suffering in it and it's too much to bear for him. So he develops a strong moral code and sticks to it. Otherwise, everything that goes on around him would have driven him to despair and hopelessness long ago. Much like the girl in the tale, those who see what lies under the surface will find there's a much more complex man that what he initially appears to be.

Rank: 1
Background: Warning: Mentions of child abuse, torture, and child death ahead.
Walter Kovacs was born on March 21st, 1940 in New York City. His father was already long gone by the time he was born and his mother Sylvia was a prostitute who abused young Walter at every turn. When two neighborhood bullies mocked him for having a whore for a mother when he was ten years old, he brutally attacked them. Social services finally became involved and he was sent to a boy's home. It was here, where he excelled in literature, that he first became aware of the supernatural world through his readings. Unlike some, who might have wanted to study magic or become a member of the supernatural, Walter decided such a place seemed unnatural and unruly.
He had vague thoughts of becoming a hunter, but nothing concrete was ever put into effect until he heard of a young woman named Kitty Genovese being attacked while her neighbors did nothing. The whole thing sounded suspicious to him and the young twentysomething decided to investigate. It wasn't long before he found the meta-human who had done her in. He got enough evidence for the man to be punished by the New Amsterdam's Assembly, New York's equivalent of the Night Council. From then on, he was a hunter in the big city. He wore a mask in an attempt to hide his identity, maintain some privacy, and give him a face that he could stand to look at.
One of his first hunts was saving a young witch from a very angry fae who had become obsessed with her. In gratitude, she enchanted his mask to always be a series of ever changing inkblots. He wore it all the way to his death and even beyond. The mask gave him the nickname that other hunters eventually referred to him as: Rorschach. During this period of time, he was still merciful, and reluctant to kill, though he showed a deep prejudice towards anyone who wasn't human.
He would occasionally join up with other hunters, but for the most part, Rorschach remained a loner, forming few friends or meaningful relationships. His obsession with hunting overtook his whole life in 1975. A little girl was kidnapped by a werewolf. Rorschach promised her parents she would come home safely. Instead, he discovered the wolf had killed her, butchered her body, and eaten her. Rorschach snapped and killed the werewolf in cold blood. After that, what was left of Walter Kovacs seemed to fade away until there was only his hunting persona left.
In 1985, someone killed an old, experienced hunter named Eddie Blake. Rorschach became immediately suspicious and warned his fellow hunters, most of whom had retired or moved on from the hunting business by then. He and an old friend, Dan Dreiburg, found evidence that Adrian Veidt, another hunter, was planning to team up with the fae to gain what they thought was ultimate power. They followed Veidt to London, where he revealed his true plan: he was going to cast a spell that would prevent supernatural beings from entering several major cities entirely all over the world, an extreme method to make them safer places for human beings. All that he needed to do was sacrifice a certain number of people from each city to do so.
Rorschach had a choice: stopping Veidt meant letting innocent people become the victims of werewolves, vampires, fae, and others who wanted to harm them. But letting him get away with it meant that others would have to die. For the first time in his life, what Rorschach knew was right in his heart didn't match up with what he knew was right in his head. He begged the extremely powerful fae at the scene to kill him instead of compromising his ideals. The fae obliged.
Shortly after death, Rorschach had realized he'd become what he hated most: a member of the supernatural community as a ghost. The memories of his death were hazy and he couldn't remember how or why he had died. He couldn't understand why he hadn't moved on and figured that his unfinished business was because he wasn't ready to stop being a hunter. To continue on was easier said than done. Rorschach had all the social skills of a mangy alley cat and was as antisocial as they came. Forming an anchor would be hard if not impossible. He went years and years without making any progress, stranded between life and death, unable to communicate with anyone. His memory of his life began to fade and some of the details were lost.
Eventually, he made his way to Hillingdon, attracted by the community of hunters that reminded him so much of home. He became the resident ghost, taking up space in the house. Calm and comfortable for the first time in over thirty years, he became part of the house's furniture, and found himself able to manifest for the first time. He decided this was where he belonged. These days, he manifests mostly to either criticize the hunters and their "soft methods", or more rarely, to offer a piece of well-meaning advice.
Personality: Rorschach is someone who thinks entirely in black and white, i.e. moral absolutes. There is no in-between or shades of grey where he is concerned. As a hunter, it was a wonderful, brutal method to deal with the supernatural beings. He saw vampires and werewolves as being complete monsters. Fae and shapeshifters were little better. Meta-humans and witches he still saw as being worthy of being called human beings, though he considered them both to be freaks. Ghosts, ironically, he never thought much of until he became one.
While Rorschach may seem tough, gruff, and laconic on the outside, it's a different story on the inside. Here was someone who could feel things deeply that the world treated badly. After being bruised and hurt one too many times, he went in the opposite direction, shutting down his emotions entirely instead of risking anyone breaking him down any further.
This was reflected in the deep divide between who he was as Walter and who he was as Rorschach. Walter felt empathy for the victims of supernatural attacks. Rorschach saw them as being weak. Walter let the supernatural beings live even when they did wrong. Rorschach brutally punished them for their transgressions. Walter was someone who needed to be around humanity, even as disconnected from it as he was. Rorschach needed nothing, not friends, food, or even sleep. All he was created for was to do his job and do it well.
Since he's died, this acute divide between the two sides of his personality has begun to blur once more. Little pieces of his emotional side, long thought dead, have begun to waken from dormancy. While it's currently only manifesting itself as a need to be around and occasionally talk to people, the potential there to grow into something more is there.
When he was alive, he was anti-social and reclusive. Occasionally, he would work with other hunters, but for the most part, he preferred to keep everyone at arm's length, not letting them through the hard shell he worked to create around him. This was an extreme method to prevent himself from getting hurt. As a ghost, not much has changed. Now, when he doesn't want to interact with someone, he can just fade away instead of manifesting.
One thing that has remained with Rorschach both as a human and a ghost is his need to interact with people. It's the one last part that remains of humanity and the man that Walter used to be. Despite keeping everyone else at arm's length, he did keep track of one friend when he was alive. Dan Dreiburg and he were partners for a time and Rorschach tried harder with him than anyone else, going so far as to apologize when he was acting difficult during their last case together.
There's the cliche of being careful what you wish for. Rorschach always wanted to be left alone. As a ghost, he got his wish in the worst way possible. Spending so many years by himself has made him develop an acute sense of loneliness. Despite his hard shell, he's developed a longing to both interact with people and connect with them on an emotional level. Yet he's still unsure how to do that, barely having enough power to manifest himself and being emotionally crippled to an unhealthy extreme.
Powers & Possessions: He has the usual powers of a ghost, though he is far weaker than ghosts of his age due to his lack of emotional connections. Right now, all he can do is manifest himself.
Samples: Sample 1: What do you mean Raw-Shark?
Sample 2: Rorschach was up early in the Hillingdon House. He was down in the kitchen, staring at the jar of sugar like he was going to burn a hole in it by sheer force of will. Many things had faded from his time as a human being. He'd forgotten how to breathe, what sleeping and dreaming felt like, and even what it had been like to be visible all the time. What hadn't faded was the memory of sugar cubes. He'd always had some in his pocket, chomping on them whenever the urge struck him. Right now, he'd give up what passed for a soul to have a bite of just one.
If anyone came into the kitchen, his head would whip around, alarmed, and he'd suddenly disappear. When he realized it was just another resident of Hillingdon, he flickered back into existence, taking up residence at the table once again. He didn't say hello or make any introduction. This was on par for interactions with the quiet, laconic ghost. Rorschach was always just sort of there, like a piece of furniture that they just couldn't seem to get rid of. He waited until most of the residents had dispersed for the day before heading off into their rooms. Some might consider it a breach of privacy, but unless they wanted to start putting salt lines around their doors to keep him out, Rorschach would continue his nosy behavior.
He found a curious file of paperwork strewn out across one desk. Someone was working a case involving a pattern of people who had suddenly vanished, each happening at the same time every month. Some might have thought it the work of vampires or werewolves, but glancing at the profiles of the victims made Rorschach think it was fae, kidnapping beautiful people for their own wants. Well, he could find that out quicker and better than any hunter there at Hillingdon. Being incorporeal had its benefits sometimes. He'd find out what precisely was going on and return to tell the hunter what he had found. The day was suddenly looking up.
World building
Locations: New Amsterdam's Assembly, run out of a seemingly harmless looking skyscraper in Manhattan. The equivalent in New York to the Night Council, they've been around in some form or another since the colony was first formed in 1626.
Items: A mask that he was wearing when he died, enchanted with the Blotting spell.
Magic: Blotting. A low-level spell that allows the user to create a series of ever-changing shapes when attached to a surface to put them on. The shapes can be either colorful or simple black shadows. Though it's mostly used as a party trick, skilled witches can make the spell last for years.

Personality: Rorschach is someone who, above all else, thinks in terms of black and white, i.e. moral absolutism. Since the world isn’t made up of black and white decisions, this proves to be a difficult ideal for him to achieve. He sees a very deep divide between his superhero identity of Rorschach and Walter Kovacs the person. As far as he’s concerned, Walter died a long time ago, leaving only Rorschach to patrol the streets of NYC. In reality, there’s still something human inside of him, something that he wishes he could just discard or get rid of, yet he truly never will.
There’s two layers to Rorschach. On the outside, he’s a tough-as-nails vigilante who is unwilling to compromise. He takes things to the extremes, such as breaking men’s fingers when he needs information or flat-out killing criminals to prevent them from continuing their ways. He barely tolerates even other superheroes, insulting and judging them for what he sees as immorality or indecent lifestyles.
Underneath, however, there’s a man who’s been broken down so many times, in so many ways, that there’s barely anything left of his humanity. He represents the deconstructed idea of what would happen if someone truly became a superhero. The answer is someone who has become crazy from doing it for so long. Rorschach is socially inept and unable to truly function outside of his self-proclaimed role of vigilante. He has no friends, family, or job, rejecting many of the ideas most people hold dear. He keeps everyone at arm’s length and keeps his walls up for a variety of reasons: he doesn’t want to hurt them, he’s afraid of being hurt himself, or that he just really doesn’t have time to deal with humanity’s little idiocies. Simple human interaction, like a handshake given to a friend, is difficult, though not impossible.
Also of note is the way he treats one of the main people in his life. Nite Owl was once his partner, and while Rorschach considers him to be wasting his life’s potential when the story begins, there are hints that he still holds some affection for the other man. He goes so far as to apologize and shake his hand after an argument, something he’s capable of doing with no other person. While he may not care to admit it, even to himself, his relationship with Nite Owl fulfills the part of him that still needs basic human interaction. He’s probably the only friend Rorschach will ever truly have.
Most of what makes him up stems from his past. Severely abused as a child by his prostitute mother, it formed his ideas of how women and men really are from a young age. He sees all women as whores and all men as being controlled by their lust. Originally, when he first started out as a superhero, he let criminals live, despite his black-and-white thinking. This changed after a case where a little girl was abducted, brutally killed by her abductor, and fed to his dogs. Rorschach killed for the first time and permanently tried to put the persona of Walter behind him. He then started believing that the world was shaped by the men around it. Since most men were inherently wicked, this made the world a blight that needs to cleansed and he was going to be the one that would do it.
Is this character immune? Yes.

NETWORK SAMPLE: [The first glimpse of Rorschach given is a face hidden by the shadows created by his hat brim. The camera’s positioned in an awkward spot, like he’s laid it down on top of a shelf or something similar, so it’s looking down at him. All that can really be made out is that he’s wearing a mask of some sort. Then he tilts his head back, looking up to face the camera. The black-and-white face comes more prominently into view. The viscous blots swirl around his face and all that can be heard for a moment is the sound of his breathing.
When he finally speaks, his voice sounds raspy and gravelly, like he’s been gargling nails for years.]
Been walking through this city. Reminds me of home. That stain created by people in their desire to rot everything around them. Wonder if it’s the same everywhere, if there’s no spot mankind hasn’t corrupted with their putrid filth. The way it’s always been, all the way back to when Adam was first tempted by Eve.
[He stops, clearly having lost his train of thought. Believe it or not, he did have a clear point when he started off this video. It comes back to him and he continues on like nothing ever happened.]
Can’t trust a place full of corruption. It extends everywhere, even unto the highest levels of state and government. I won’t be staying in the place they’ve set out for me, waiting there like a dog blindly obeying its master. If you need me, I’ll be on the streets.
